Fall programs.. plans afoot

We are starting to plan our Fall programs at the library. We’ll be having Teen Lounge EVERY WEEK at Berwick, Bridgetown, Lawrencetown, Kentville, and Windsor. We are planning some drumming workshops, movie nights, Halloween Lock-ins, and possibly a yoga class. Perhaps you’ll see a few coffee houses, craft nights, and….??? What else?

We plan to have snacks when possible, and there will be candy at some events (you said you want candy, we’ll give you candy). Let us know what you’d like to do, and we’ll try to do it. All you have to do is tell us!

Send me an email at teensrp@nsar.library.ns.ca, and let us know what you want at your library. We’re all ears.

Guitar Hero Rock-Out!

So, you think you can play? Now is your chance to show your Guitar Hero stuff at the library! If you’ve spent hours honing your GH skills, why not enter our contest– you could win an electric guitar & amp (plus a free guitar lesson), or maybe some free CDs! So, here’s the scoop:

K-Rock is co-sponsoring our first ever Guitar Hero Rock Out! We will hold qualifying rounds at 4 branches– Berwick, Bridgetown, Kentville, and Windsor. 4 people from each branch will advance to the finals, which will be held August 7 at the Kentville Lions Hall. So, keep practising, and enter– you could be the winner!

Our sponsors are K-Rock– join the K-Rock staff at each event– they’ll be there to watch you rock out; Long & McQuade donated the electric guitar package; local musician Caleb Miles will give the winner a free guitar lesson; and CD Plus is donating gift cards.

We’re rockin’ the library this summer! Click hereGH logo for registration and more details!

Maybe we have it.

I’ve been compiling some results from a recent Teen Survey we conducted, and I find them very interesting. Most helpful, in fact. One thing it tells me is that somehow I have to get you back to our libraries to give us a second chance. Many of you asked for the very things that we already have. For instance: DVDs to borrow. We have them. Maybe not as many new copies as a video store, but we don’t charge for ours (unless you keep them too long). New books– such as Twilight, Sarah Dessen books, and sports books. All asked for, and we have them all. Magazines– got ‘em. CD’s — got ‘em, though I could sure use some suggestions for titles.

For programs, you said you’d like Movie Nights, and so we are offering those. Check our website for the latest offerings. How about some talent nights, you ask. Working on that one right now! I hope to be able to release details soon. Board games and video games — we have Wii, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and DDR. Tell me your favourite board games and we’ll get some!

So, lots of your ideas are being used to make our programs and materials selection better. Please send more ideas because the library is for you too– not just for little kids or a place boring people go. Give us a chance to show you that we can be a good spot for you to hang out, too!

Teen Lounge is back!!

You say there’s nothing to do. No place you can just hang out. Wrong!

The library is always a place that welcomes you, and now, 3 of our libraries have TeenLounge, a place and time just for teens. You can hang out, use our computers, play games, watch some anime, and just be yourself. We might have Wii or Guitar Hero set up or maybe we’ll be screening some of your favourite anime shows. Maybe you just want a place to get some homework done. Stop by and see what’s happening at your library — TeenLounge is for ages 12-18, so the space is open then, just for YOU!Come on, you know it will be fun. See you there.

PMOG! OMG!

Have you tried PMOG? What the heck is PMOG, you might ask. It stands for Passively Multiplayer Online Game. You’ll need to be using Firefox in order to play, because PMOG requires that you install a Firefox add-on. What do you do? Well– if you are an Internet Junkie, and visit lots of websites, you get points. You get 2 points for every new website you open. You can create missions for others to take, place portals, and if you so desire, you can lay mines and scare people. You can leave presents (in crates) for people, and become allies or rivals of other players. Or, you can just install the add-on and be PASSIVE, as the game name implies– visit websites and gather points. But in order to level up, you have to be a little more active. It is fun, and you can construct your web habits according to the missions online. Take a peek at PMOG, and find me, AnnaValley, on there! Take my missions, become my Aquaintance or Ally.

Have fun, but don’t forget to read books too in between PMOG sessions.
